Establishing a priori estimates is critical to the study of nonlinear elliptic equations. In this talk we discuss the roles of subsolution and concavity in some recent work in deriving second derivative estimates for a class of fully nonlinear equations which play important roles of geometry and analysis. As an application of our results, we give a proof of a conjecture of Gauduchun concerning metrics on Hermitian manifolds, building on results of Tossati and Weinkove.
